MAS’s Quarterly Social and Economic Monitor, Volume 19

This volume of the Economic and Social monitor outlines the main trends in economic and social development in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the third quarter of 2009. These conditions are a continuation of what had been the case during the months of the second quarter of the year. At the political level, there has been no change in the political stalemate; the Israeli government continues to refuse to apply the terms of the road map. On the economic front, the Gaza Strip is still under siege and there has been no serious progress in addressing the catastrophic effects of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip (Dec. 27th, 2008 – Jan. 18th, 2009). As a result, economic activity continued to decline in Gaza and unemployment and poverty remain widespread. Economic activity in the West Bank also experienced a slight decline after the improvement that began at the end of last year as a result of the flow of international aid and the relative political calm that prevailed in the Palestinian territories in recent months.

Local Marketing of Irrigated Cash Crops in Palestine

Local Marketing of Irrigated Cash Crops in Palestine

This study aims to analyse the marketing of irrigated agricultural cash crops in the West Bank. The study explores the problems facing this sector and offers some policies that may contribute to solving them, and in turn, lead to further growth and development in the sector. Solving such problems and improving agricultural marketing practices, may enhance food security situation both at the farmer's family level and at the national level.

The study concentrates on irrigated cash crops due to their significance in terms of productivity. Indeed, one irrigated dunum is approximately 28 times more productive than a rain-fed dunum.

In view of the current Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, which has created agricultural problems in Gaza distinct from those in the West Bank, this study will examine the marketing of cash crops in the West Bank only.
